Brody's Lesson - November 13, 2018

Goals

•Decrease speed loss during forward->backward transition
•Develop chained transition skills (forward->back->forward... etc)
•Introduce backward crossover

Warmup

(OFF ICE) Go up stairs sideways (for crossover leg movement)

(ON ICE) "Skate around," but I will call out "switch," indicating that Brody should switch forward->back

Skills

FORWARD->BACKWARD TRANSITION

•Have Brody demonstrate this transition; he is quite fond of it right now.

•If he "scrapes" while executing it, introduce mohawk-like foot movement to preserve speed during the transition.

•Do forward->back transition with NO push after; examine speed in resulting two-foot glide.

CHAINED TRANSITIONS

•Forward->back transition to two foot glide with step-forward after a brief glide
•Make a game of reducing this pause until he completes a transition with no pause
•Instruct him to do two or more chained transitions, but WATCH for speed increasing to the point that the transitions become out of control

BACKWARD CROSSOVERS

•Complete the "Snake Edges" exercise from last week, but on backward outside edges
•Hold backward outside edge (one direction only) on circle for at least five seconds
•Finally, introduce the cross motion of the crossover, recalling the leg movement developed on the stairs. Initially, the recovery to two-foot skating is optional, since the edge correctness takes higher priority. If he does well, introducing the recovery is possible.

Drills

DRILL 1: DEFENSIVE PIVOT RACE

The coach will have the pucks at center ice just outside the blue line. Set up cones or discs as shown in the diagram.

On the whistle, players skate forward and transition towards the middle of the ice around the cone on the goal line. They skate backwards as fast as they can to the cone at the top of the circle.

At the cone, they open up their hips and pivot forward to skate around the cone in the middle. Emphasize that skaters may not perform cross-overs. The players then race to the puck that is placed in the slot by the coach.

DRILL 2: FORWARD POWER CIRCLE

This is the same drill as last week, but here is my description of it again for reference:

Description: This is a figure skating test from the USFS Moves In The Field Juvenile test. I need a pattern to put here, but the concept is that the skater starts in the middle of the ice and does crosssovers in a single direction. The skater increases the power of the crossovers to increase the radius of the circle, forming my nickname for them, "Shell Crossovers."
